The Ongoing Life of Brent and Erika

Okay. I'm starting to recognize that I have neglected this blog for way too long. If I'm not careful, people are going to stop checking it! And then where would we be?

This summer is flying by. The way I pictured it being and the way it has actually been are mostly two separate things. Mostly I imagined a lot of sitting around and relaxing and getting bored. While we have had more relaxation time than we do during the school year, I just feel like we're busy busy busy. I'll try to give you some of the highlights, with pictures (when appropriate).

On June 11th, Brent's brother Mark went into the MTC! Unfortunately, we don't have the pictures to this one, but we will someday. Both varieties of Elder Hill are doing well. They both say the language is coming well. My brother Alex was actually supposed to go to Mexico on Monday, but they're having visa troubles. He seems to be taking it well.

In June we took a short trip with my parents to go to Washington to see my brother Nicholas graduate! The picture at the beginning is from our stop in Twin Falls, ID to see...the Twin Falls! They were pretty sweet--Brent is fascinated by water and the cool things it can do, so we stayed quite a while. They had some crazy wind though--look at my hair!

So we left on a Thursday, arrived in Washington on Friday, and Nick's graduation was on Saturday. Look! A graduate!

Don't quite feel like you were there? Maybe these will help.

I think my brother is one of the people on that ramp. I think he's the one on the bottom of the ramp on the left side. The commencement was good but LONG--it makes me glad I didn't go to my own commencement (of course, my commencement featured Dick Cheney, and I really didn't want to get there are 1 for all the security precautions for a program that didn't start until 4. Plus, I was writing my speech). Anyway, we're glad we went to see it happen. Afterwards, Nick introduced us to the wonders of Mongolian Grill, which I fell in love with. We're still trying to find a good one in the Provo/Orem area. Anyone know of one? He also introduced us to Rockband, which heavily influenced our decision to buy a wii (no, Barbara, we don't have MarioKart yet, but I think it might be our next purchase. Brent played a demo version and fell in love).

On the way home from Washington we took a scenic road home so that we could at least see Mt. Ranier. We wanted to hike it, but the trip was just a little too short! As you can see, there was still tons of snow up at the top.

After the Washington trip, the next fun thing was that my friend Katie stayed with us for a few days! Among other things (most of which included reminiscing about high school days and sleepovers), we made a cake sculpture! How fun and random!

Okay, this is getting too long, and I have to blowdry my hair before it goes all crazy by itself. Just wanted you to know we're here, we're alive, and we're happy!

Year of (Almost) No Fast Food: July Update

I'm pretty sure no one reads this blog, so it won't be a surprise to anyone that it's taken me longer to do an update than I meant it to. But I do kind of want to check in at least monthly to see how my year of no fast food is going. Right now I'd say it's going...okay. I did really well the month of June. I think I ate fast food on six occasions: 1. Right before my sister's play, which was allowed because it was date night but we were late. 2. The night before Father's Day, because that's where my father-in-law wanted to go for dinner. 3. & 4. Brent and the boys brought me lunch twice. 5. While visiting my sister-in-law and looking at her new house, we bought everyone lunch. 6. On the way to my parents' house, we got food because I'd just had surgery and couldn't cook. The last week of June, I made an appointment with a surgeon to talk about my pesky gallbladder. It hasn't been giving me a ton of grief, but since Felix was ...

The Brand New Life of Baby Alice

Preface: This post has taken me a year to write. I'm not even sure exactly when all the edits happened. I started writing on Valentine's day, and then 2020 unfolded from there. This is a birth story, but also a 2020 story, because how could it not be? I'll try to make it clear when there's been a time jump. Here we go!  *** It is Valentine’s Day; I am sitting at my work computer and pumping while my husband and kids play with their cousins since I’m preparing to throw a party for other couples. It seemed too soon to leave our newest babe with a sitter, so here (and there) we all are. It seems as good a time as any to start writing out Alice’s birth story.  This pregnancy was a long one, because I really feel like it started in November of 2018. Back then, I found myself unexpectedly pregnant, a phrase it’s weird to even type because when you experience 7 years of infertility, unplanned pregnancy just doesn’t seem like it will ever be part of your story. Yet, there I wa...

The Brand New Life of Felix: A Birth Story

It is 6:02 AM, and by a cruel trick of the universe I cannot get back to sleep. Sometimes, in those times when I should be sleeping but my brain can’t turn off, I think of all the things I don’t want to forget. I don’t want to forget web team meeting at 12:00 today. I don’t want to forget to buy better picture-hanging nails. But most pressing this morning was this: I don’t want to forget the details of Felix’s birth. And so here’s the story that I wasn’t wrong in thinking it would take me four months to write. Here’s Felix’s birth story. As I wrote in my last post, this pregnancy was hard for me. Physically, it was so challenging, but towards the end it was really mentally tough. Because I was due at the end of December, I wasn’t even sure what year this baby would be born, and for some reason that was really hard. I didn’t know what to plan for. Some time in November, our families kept asking us when we thought would be a good time for family Christm...
